'Political figure' could be outed as child abuser on BBC

A SENIOR political figure could be outed as a paedophile on the BBC's Newsnight, it was claimed today.

A legal team is looking into the investigation about the unnamed man, who is alive.

It was revealed in a mysterious tweet by Iain Overton, editor of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

He said: "If all goes well we've got a Newsnight out tonight about a very senior political figure who is a paedophile."

The BBC has refused to comment on the story.

Channel Four political correspondent Michael Crick says he has spoken to the person at the centre of the allegations, who said he would sue Newsnight if it runs the show.

The revelation comes after Freddie Starr was arrested yesterday by police officers investigating the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal.

Savile, who died last year at the age of 84, is now believed to have been one of the UK’s most prolific abusers, with about 300 possible victims. Scotland Yard is leading a national investigation into the television and radio star’s activities.

Detectives are following 400 lines of inquiry while the BBC has launched an investigation into the culture and practices at the corporation in the era of Savile’s alleged sexual abuse.

It is also looking at the decision-making process which saw a Newsnight investigation into Savile’s activities shelved. The review, led by Nick Pollard, former head of Sky News, will report back on its findings later this month.
